It’s monthly DIY challenge time! Leather edition!! Have you ever been to a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store? They are so fun!! They house a lot of donated housing materials so you can go in and find a new surprise every visit. A couple of months ago we were walking through and I found these adorable little mid-century geometric tables. Honestly, they were hideous and really dirty. I decided to reupholster them with leather from The Leather Hide Store.
I picked out a nice rich leather upholstery. I went with a nice, rich grey leather and Leather Hide Store was gracious enough to give me a very large hide. This leather is TOP quality, smells amazing and worked perfectly for this project.
How to Reupholster Side Tables
Step 1. Try to de-uglify it. These tables were previously upholstered with this brown fabric from the 1970’s. What I did first was unscrew the 3 screws holding the tabletop on. Next, I flipped the table over then unscrewed the little legs from each table. Next was removing the staples. This was pretty easy and there were not too terribly many to deal with.
Step 2. Marvel at what you find under the brown fabric from the 1970’s. Ew. It is greenish blue….carpet? I decided to leave it. It was clean and it added a nice plushness to the side tables.
Step 3. Lay your leather out on a flat surface, in my case that was out coffee table. Decide how much leather you will need and start trimming. Once it is cut to size wrap one side over the top and use a heavy duty stapler to secure it the your table. Do that same with the other side, make sure it is pulled very taught.
Step 4. Start folding the leather up are the top and bottom while stapling into place. For the corners use a tuck and fold to get the flattest corners.
Step 5. Paint the table tops in any way you like. I chose white chalk paint. Once they are dry screw the tabletops back on using the existing holes and screws.
Step 6. Clean the legs/feet up and put them back on the side table. Our feet were really scratched and scuffed but I figured out the simplest little solution to make them look shiny and new. I’ll share that with y’all on Friday!
I love how these little tables turned out. Best of all you can separate them to different spots or put them together in various different configurations. So cute!!
