Hey hey! Wellllll, it’s One Room Challenge week 3 and we still don’t have drywall hung. It JUST got delivered today, so we are most definitely behind and I’m sweating it big time because we are supposed to be out of town the next TWO weekends. Eeeeek! There has been other progress though, so onward and upward friends!

We hung some insulation near the exterior wall and we sanded the floor, which turned out to be a big pain in the butt. There was shellac under 2 coats of paint and it just kept gumming up our sanding pads. So frustrating!! But we got it done and when the time comes, with a good cleaning, it will be ready for paint. We will be using Sherwin Williams Porch & Floor Enamel and I can not wait to see that bright white go on these floors.
I also FINALLYYYYYY finished removing wallpaper. There were so many freaking layers with plaster in between. UGH. But it’s gone and I was so excited to see that semi-white plaster beneath! I could not have done this wallpaper removal without the HomeRight steamer, this thing is a MUST if you live in an old house that needs a lot of wallpaper removed. I’ve also patched the cracks and gouges in all of the plaster and it’s ready for it’s first skim coat tomorrow, wahooooo!! We also have new electrical ran for the ceiling fixture, which is great because the old stuff was knob and tube, not super safe.
The plan for the ceiling right now is to clean it up, find rough sawn 2×6 boards to match it so we can trim the edges out then remove the old electrical that is still hanging around up there looking ugly. We will also build a rectangular box around the electrical box whihc will hide it and give the chandelier something to anchor in to.
My plan for the fireplace keeps changing. The only decision that has stayed the same is that the gorgeous Victorian brass surround will be staying. I’ve been taking a few minutes here and there to use Brasso on it. It’s taking a lot of elbow grease with all the layers of tarnish and detail. I’ll get there eventually!
The drywall will start going up tonight but it may take a couple of days to hang because it’s a two person job and Joel works during the day. But I am so excited to use this drywall screw gun from Ryobi. Stay tuned for stories on that action!! Once it’s hung, taping – mudding – sanding ….that’s allll me baby. I might miss out on a trip to Denver/IKEA this weekend to stay behind and get work done though. Bummer but you do what you gotta do when the One Room Challenge deadline is the BOSS.
So let’s look at the list of ALL the progress so far:
remove drop ceiling
remove light fixture
remove mirrors
remove mantel and tile
demo plaster + lathe on ceiling and mirror wall
remove wallpaper
Re-run electrical for ceiling fixture/light switch
Sand Floor to prep for paint
One Room Challenge Week 3 List of goals:
Hang Drywall
Tape + Mud + Sand Drywall
Skimcoat + Sand Plaster Walls
List of Hopefully but not likely to happen goals:
Liquid deglosser on all window trim
Prime all walls and trim
Fingers crossed we get more done than we think we can. This is a crazy amount of work and honestly I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Then that 2nd wall had to come down. Then we had to wait on an electrician. Then we got a drywal quote that was WAY out of the budget and had to figure out a way to get drywall delivered to our house in order to do it ourselves! But we’re still stoked to be working on this space a big beautiful historic home. We’re kinda living the dream, DIY style!
HUGE thanks to my sponsors making One Room Challenge more possible.
You are not alone this week, my friend! We didn’t have as productive week as we had hoped either. Oddly enough, knowing that someone else is falling behind like I am is so helpful in a weird way. Wishing you an overload of check marks on this week’s to do!
That makes me feel better too! Thanks for checking in. I hope to have time to go read a lot of posts this evening.
Oh Leigh Anne. I’m so sorry that the stress is on, but I have to tell you that your space has such good bones! The work you’ve accomplished has uncovered such a treasure. Hang in there, sweet friend. This space is worth it and you can do it!!! ~~ Susie from The Chelsea Project
You got this! It’s going to be BEAUTIFUL when its done!
I didn’t get anything done this week. Your room is going to be so beautiful. You can do it!
Looks like many of us are in the same boat. I really should have gotten more done this week, but life has been happening all around me. Your mood board gives me chills girl. I love everything about it. We will all reach an amazing finish. I can feel it!
We are definitely behind, too!! I feel you with removing wallpaper – it’s probably the worst job everrrrr. Congrats on getting that done!!
I’m totally feelin ya!! These old houses just keep throwing things at ya!! I’m totally behind too, so if we are ganna be behind, at least we have each other LOL
They do!! This drywall has been a nightmare…..everything is moving soooo slow.
This is a huge makeover you’re working on, Leigh. Don’t worry, I’m sure everything will be done in time. I feel your pain about wallpaper removal. When we first bought our house, it took us days to remove all the yucky and outdated wallpaper from our dining room, kitchen, and bathrooms. It’s one of the reasons why despite how far wallpaper has come these days, I’m still hesitant to put any of that up in our home. Good luck with this week’s progress of the ORC!
We have layers and layers in EVERY single room of our house. Yuck! Agree, while I LOVE the new wallpaper that has come out, it’s hard to consider putting it up after spending so much time and energy removing it all.
We didn’t have a lot of progress this week either. Good luck this week! The room is going to be great!
It’s SLOOOOOOW moving right now, but it will all be worth it in the end, even if that “end” comes after ORC.
Wow! You took on a lot for this challenge. My fingers are crossed for you! I can’t wait to see the end result.
