Hey Hey!
Do y’all remember this ugly old Vanity that landed in my lap for free? I asked you if I should Fix It or Nix It? Well, after a few hundred comments here on the blog, Facebook and Hometalk I decided to keep it and work some magic on it.
Let me remind you of the before photos:
Here she is after:
I’ll be the first to admit this is not my style at all. It was a fun little project to work on for some experience though. I used a DIY chalk paint recipe. I added gold to the detail work with a Gold Sharpie Paint Pen. Then I distressed the whole thing a little and finished it off with a wax finishing paste.
I tried really hard to save the wood finish, especially the top but it was beyond repair. I used Citristrip on the top and then tried to sand the stains/gouges out but it was not coming out. As a matter of fact when I finally bit the bullet and started with the chalk paint the stains on top kept bleeding through. Many many coats later they are hidden.
In the end I only spent $13 on the pretty knobs and I have two left over. I’ll likely sell this piece but I’m glad I decided to make it over instead of just nixing it!
Wow you’re really talented…I’m working on a side table right now that I’ve decided to donate to the dumpster about 5 times but I think I might finally have a plan that I like…and chalk paint is part of that…Love that stuff!
Thanks Deonna! I can’t wait to see your side table! I’ve got a Moroccan side table I’m working on next, but I’d like to go bold with it. Chalk paint is the best invention since bubble gum, for real!
Love that you had fun with this and those knows really are adorable! Was it hard to use the paint pen in the detailing?
I just love how this turned out–great job! Blessings, Cecilia
I love this! I have my mother’s bedroom set that is over 60 yrs. old, it includes a vanity much like this one. It is in very bad shape. I was thinking about sanding it then re-painting it white and trim it in gold. This makes me even more determined to get it done. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Rebecca! I’m glad this gave you a push! Would love to see the piece when you are done 🙂
Wow that was a lot of work but the finished product is gorgeous! Great job!
