Hey hey! I know it has been a while since I posted!! I’ve missed y’all. We went on vacation and I took a little time before that off just for a breather. I know I’m not alone when I say, this back to school is tough, plus work, blog, house cleaning, projects….and the list goes on…Sometimes you just have to get off that hamster wheel. But, I’m back with the Monthly DIY Challenge today! The whole team is using Mod Podge this month!! I know painted mugs have been done a gazillion times. But have you ever wondered, how to paint a mug and make it dishwasher safe? These painted mugs are special because they are…wait for it….DISHWASHER SAFE! Dishwasher safe painted mugs are pretty simple once you know the secret item you need!
These dishwasher safe painted mugs take no time to make. They require no oven baking at all! I actually used a product that Plaid gave to our whole team called Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge. Honestly, I was skeptical but I put these mugs to the dishwasher tests and they came out just as shiny and beautiful as they went in.
Updated January 2019 – Just to be safe, I always put my mugs on the top rack and I don’t use the dry setting. I’ve had a few questions about whether you can put pictures on the mug or raised vinyl. I haven’t personally tried this but if you do, let me know if it works! I also received questions about where I put the dishwasher safe mod podge….I put it all over the outside of the cup. These are absolutely food safe!
There are no before pictures….I know…bad blogger. I’ll show you what I used though!

2 Steps to Make Dishwasher Safe Painted Mugs
First, wash and dry your mug. They get really dusty sitting in the store. Next, decide what design you want on yours. I took the INCREDIBLY easy way out and just did a little abstract whisper stroke coming up from the bottom of the mug. I did 2 layers. I let that dry for about an hour while I did some other things around the house, see hamster wheel mentioned above in first paragraph 😉
After the paint was dry I just painted on the dishwasher safe Mod Podge. This stuff goes on super smooth and leaves a great finish. I used the “Gloss” and as you can see it turned out great! Now you can make all the mugs you want and still be able to run them through the dishwasher. Cute mugs + Less Work = Happy Momma!! I drink coffee every morning and both of these mugs have been through the dishwasher and came out looking good still. Exciting! You can also do the ever-so-popular Sharpie mug and use the dishwasher safe Mod Podge on top of it. Will you be making your own dishwasher safe painted mugs?
Be sure to check out the rest of the team’s Mod Podge projects, they are all great! But don’t go just yet, there’s a GIVEAWAY!! Enter to win a $50 gift card to Plaid and product package worth $100!!
I’ve always wanted to try painting some dishes! LOVE how these turned out!!!
Whattttt, this is SO AWESOME. I’ma need to decorate some mugs STAT.
Thanks for this tip, Leigh Anne! I didn’t think you could seal the paint with the Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge – I guess it didn’t even dawn on me! I love this idea!!
This has been on my to do list for a long time and I love these! You’re giving me the motivation to try it!
I had no clue they made dishwasher safe Mod Podge! You are the queen of black, white and gold and your mugs are perfect.
I really enjoyed reading your post. I thought your post was beautifully written. Thanks for guide!
You’re welcome, thanks for reading!!
Excellent info here, I am currently doing some research and found exactly what I was looing for. Thanks for all these benefical informations.
Great! Thanks for reading!!
These actually look pretty nice! I wonder if they are just as shiny in real life. Great project! 🙂
Do you Mod Podge the whole outside of the cup, or just where it is painted? I want to use words and was wondering if I keep the stencil on ans mod podge over that, or the whole area.
Yes, I’d do the entire side of the cut so you don’t have any ridges.
Thank you, I have to try this 😊
Yeah, I’d do the entire outside of the cup so you don’t have any ridges.
Where did you find dishwasher safe modge podge? I’m looking for it at my local Walmart and don’t see that on these bottles! Also I was wondering using the dishwasher safe Modge Podge could I put a picture on a cup? You’ve Got My Mind being creative don’t want to stop at while it’s moving LOL
I have bought it from Amazon! I’ve never done a picture but I’m sure you could. Slather a layer of the dishwasher safe Mod Podge, stick the picture on, then slather more over it. https://rstyle.me/cz-n/da4vi5b6ff7
DId you “cure” the paint in the oven at all? Im finding a lot of instructions say let it “cure’ for 28 days?
Curious as well
I’m also curious if there is a need to cure the mug. I also painted a mug with acrylic paint, and after letting it dry for over 12 hours the paint on the mug is still flaking off when I try to brush the mod podge on it.
How long does the Mod Podge take to cure? My friend and I want to do mugs along with other things such as plates, bowls, etc, but I heard that it takes 28 days to cure before use.
That’s correct! 28 day cure time.
As long as you don’t use water based paint, do you think other colors will work? Such as acrylic colors maybe? I would love to try this for christmas presents, however i am unsure of the kind of color i should use… This dishwasher safe Mod podge helped a lot, it’s exactly what i was looking for!
Awesome DIY piece.
Modge podge came off un the dishwasher on the first cleaning. It had 3 coatings to protect it. Is there something stronger?
It takes 28 DAYS(!!!) to cure.
I wish you would have stressed the 28 DAY curing time that’s required of this Mod Podge.
