I’m starting to think Kids’ bedrooms are my favorite spaces. They allow such space for creativity and risk taking. I re-did Sophia’s bedroom about 2 years ago and while I LOVED her space, I always knew the bed wasn’t quite right for her modern, Scandi-style bedroom. Unfortunately, all of the gorgeous beds I fell in love with were out of my budget. And quite honestly, I was a little scared to tackle a DIY bed at the time of her bedroom makeover so I made a $50 yard sale bed work for a time. But with this DIY house bed, it now it looks AMAZING and it’s just perfect!!
Over the past year or so I’ve gained some experience and confidence with DIY builds and decided I could take on a project. That combined with this super cool tool, the Kreg Jig R3, which makes pocket holes, made me super excited to get started! I chose this adorable DIY house bed for her room. She had seen a few while I scrolled through Pinterest and she loved them. I found the plans I used at Remodelaholic, created by Her Tool Belt.
This is a SUPER BASIC build. Seriously.
Wood + Supplies for DIY House Bed:
- 9 – 2″ x 4″ x 8′ boards
- Tip: My Home Depot had very red tinted 2x4x8’s and since I was leaving the wood raw, I didn’t like that look. So I checked out the 16 footers and they were much whiter wood, which is what I prefer. So if you have that same issue try this tip! I just had them cut them in half at the store so I could fit them in the old minivan.
- 3 – 2″ x 2″ x 8′ boards (actual 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″)
- 1 1/2″ screws
- 3 1/2″ pocket screws (self tapping) (note the plans call for 2 1/2, that did not work for me…they were too short)
- 2″ brad nails
- wood glue
- wood filler
- sand paper
- Clear sealer(or stain or paint)
- Kreg Jig R3
Yup, that’s just 2×4’s and 2×2’s. Not intimidating or scary, I promise!! I brought all my wood home and got busy cutting. Most of the cuts are straight cuts and for the angled cuts, I used my much loved Ryobi miter saw. Easy peasy.
Marco the Goldendoodle never misses a trip to The Home Depot!
If you are using these plans, make sure to note that the angled board that are supposed to be 30 1/16″ need to be that length WITH the angles. So measure out a few inches on each end to account for that before you cut your angles. Do as I say, not as I do. I wound up going to Home Depot a 2nd time for more 2×4’s because I goofed up on that step. But all is well that ends well.
Once all of my cuts were made I started pre-drilling all of my pocket holes according to the plans. The Kreg Jig makes this step the easiest one! It comes in a little kit with everything you need. I did purchase a Kreg clamp that makes it even easier, especially when you don’t have a 2nd set of hands around. You basically adjust your Kreg Jig to the size of your wood, put a collar on the special drill bit that comes in the kit, also placed at the depth you need, then drill baby drill. The pocket holes on the angled boards were a little tricker but totally manageable.
Her bed turned out absolutely dreamy!! It makes her bedroom really fit together now.
I’m so happy I decided to build this DIY house bed and not wimp out and get skeeeered about building and power tools. I already dreamed up a little wish list of tools! I’ve wanted a table saw for a while but living in a smaller house, with 4 other people, not a lot of storage and no garage, I didn’t really have space to store one. But!! Kreg Jig has solved that problem for me. They made these handy things called Accu-cut and Rip-cut, that can be used with a circular saw to create the same cuts a table saw would make. Yessss! I can definitely make room for these in my house and my DIY life 🙂
